Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn & Watlowes

August 28, 2010

Disappointing English summer crashed the scar where Turner painted,
Minor hoards of a last bank holiday plastic pole walkers glanced upon,
The few adventurous hikers and occasional naive tourist ventured to the foot of the falls,
Single-digit percentages of the already reduced clamber slipped beyond view up beyond the less informed.

I sat down next to men that live next to the men that hung a monkey,
They seemed like nice guys though I wondered what the ancestors of the men that hung a monkey would have to say about their neighbours who remember the monkey hanging.

Muddy sweaty two-wheeled racers passed me on the shores of the tarn, unsure of route, certain of goal.

Photographed a brown cow off the Pennine Way, yawning at a short life next to red crossed sheep in the velvet grass,
Vegetarian thinking in leather boots against what I would image if none ate meat of the sacred animal.

I was offered biscuits by the 3 male friends of the Chinese girl, none of which had climbed the rocks yet sat in the rain above Malham,
They had travelled another way, rejoicing in the lines of the limestone snake that laid in the valley below.

A wet plateau discouraged most the garish colours in the cove hoping for peregrine glow,
Cut the wrong way cross green slopes to RAV beyond, wet, change, dry, refreshed, always wondering…. Ribblehead now

A sunny start from Malham (view along Hell Gill) but with skies threatening the bad weather to come on most of this walk.

The slippery vertical scramble up the Lower Falls in Gordale Scar – on a wet day like this most people turn back and take the easy route across the adjacent hillside.

A short circular evening hike long the south rim of Kinder from Edale.  Up via Lady Booth Brook (probably one of the least used routes onto Kinder based on the amount of vegetation and significant lack of footprints in the muddy and very steep sections) and return via Grindsbrook Knoll.
